Are you just getting started in the blogging world? Maybe you’re thinking of becoming an influencer yourself? The overarching trend is JUST GO FOR IT; but what happens when you don’t know where to start or you’re scared your dreams will come crashing down?

We answer some of your burning questions on the industry, as we meet some of the UK’s most successful…

Sammi Maria: style, travel and beauty creator, Mother and business owner

Q: How were you able to go full-time as a content creator?

A: I started in this industry about 10 years ago when I was still at university so it worked out perfectly with timing. I started earning from creating around the same time as finishing my course. So I followed my passion for online content creation.

Q: What keeps you motivated in this hugely competitive industry?

A: I think just knowing that I have a voice and have a platform where I have the chance to share so much with others, whether that’s what i’m wearing or deeper matters in life. I have the ability to brighten someone’s day and give inspiration, which makes me feel driven and joyful.

Q: Honest tips for growing your audience?

A: It’s changed a lot in the last few years but i’d say engaging with your audience, knowing your audience (and potential audience) and not being scared to utilise newer platforms and create video content like IGTV.

Q: What’s been the biggest risk that’s paid off in your blogging career?

A: Signing with management. I’m with Gleam – I was a bit nervous to sign with anyone years ago but if you know a certain area isn’t your strong suit, then having support with it is priceless. They are such a positive and uplifting team!

Q: How has rewardStyle played a part in your career?

A: rewardStyle has helped greatly during my career! Bridging the gap between all the questions I often receive about what I’m wearing and where people can find it, so that I have one simple place that I can direct people to. It’s also lovely to have an app where you can visually browse just my outfits and follow other favourite creators too.

Louise Roe: TV host, fashion journalist, Mother and author

Q: How were you able to go full-time as a content creator?

A: I’m actually not full time, I work as a TV host, so it’s great to be able to balance the two. But there was a marked shift about 5 years ago, when the influencer work took over financially, and I remember thinking, this is great – because I have a lot more control over when and how I shoot that, and it means working more with my husband – who is a TV director who also shoots most of my digital campaigns.

Q: What keeps you motivated in this hugely competitive industry?

A: Moving back to England a few months ago, after 11 years in LA, has really refreshed my imagination and the projects I’d like to take on. We have renovated a 200 year-old house in the English countryside, and I am pretty obsessed over the decorating! I began a new feed to show the detail of what I was planning for each room, @LouiseRoeHome, and I am so thrilled with how people have reacted to it

Q: Honest tips for growing your audience?

A: Focus on engagement, rather than growth. A very wise woman who runs an enormous tech company here, once told me, imagine every single follower of yours in one room, or hall, or auditorium…suddenly that would look like a lot of people! Place your attention on looking after them, and your engagement will grow – and subsequently, so will your following. But algorithms don’t allow for quick fixes like they used to – for example giveaways and competitions, are just not really worth it, in my opinion. At least not at the moment, that might change!

Q: What’s been the biggest risk that’s paid off in your blogging career?

A: Moving to LA as a very green but energetic 26 year old! It resulted in a TV show with MTV that lasted 5 years, and also – my husband, whom I met on set!

Q: How has rewardStyle played a part in your career?

A: I met Amber and Baxter a long time ago, and to watch the company just expand and kill it, makes me very proud. It’s rare to have such a huge company with such an intimate culture, and her support, and her team’s support, has been so consistent and kind. In fact, I’m heading to the conference in Dallas again this Spring and cannot wait!

Q: How were you able to go full-time as a content creator?

A: When I started blogging back then, Instagram or the blog itself was not a career path, and in the beginning, it was not a platform you could monetise. I was just doing it out of passion! I was a strategy consultant before I started blogging and the moment I began creating content I saw a great response.

When I used affiliate marketing for the first time, I realised that people wanted to buy the products that I was wearing and as I started working on campaigns with brands, more and more brands started reaching out to me. I always felt that the more I did, the more the response rate was growing.

So much was happening back then and after a few months, I got so much feedback directly from brands and my audience, that I decided to work part-time as a consultant and part-time as a stylist for ASOS. Quickly enough I got so many campaign and project requests that I couldn’t be at my work anymore. That was the time that I decided to fully concentrate on my blog, and I haven’t really been home ever since!

Q: What keeps you motivated in this hugely competitive industry?

A: There is not just one motivational trigger for me. I feel that even though it’s a very competitive industry, there are only a few people that have been here for a long time, have started for a good reason, and have created serious relationships with the brands they love. Luckily, I am now working so closely with brands like Louis Vuitton, Dior and Givenchy that I feel very content about my work. Everything that I do, from creating content to modelling for editorial campaigns is so motivating and inspiring for me, that I feel thankful every day and I never doubt what I am doing.

Q: Honest tips for growing your audience?

A: I feel that nowadays it’s very different to grow your Instagram audience because the platform has changed a lot. You must be very unique, authentic and true to yourself to start an Instagram career, because, in the end, if you copy something that is already out there, people will not be excited. I, for example, have changed the way I worked on Instagram so many times, always closely relating to how I’m growing as a person.

Finding a balance between how you want to present yourself and what inspires you and your audience is the most important tip that I could give.

Q: What’s been the biggest risk that’s paid off in your blogging career?

A: The biggest risk I have taken so far is putting my successful corporate career on the side and starting blogging, and I feel that it paid off very well 🙂

Q: How has rewardStyle played a part in your career?

A: I directly started using affiliate links, and in the beginning, when the blogging industry was quite small, I was one of the few people that were selling products with rewardStyle. Since I have always been strategic and cared about my audience, I was very strong with selling products. I loved affiliate because it helped you as an early-stage blogger to monetise our content.

There are so many bloggers out there but only a few brands, so you need to be quite established in order to get a campaign project. However, with affiliate, you can start from scratch! If people are interested in your content and what you are wearing, you can directly earn some money. So, if you want to follow a career in blogging, that’s a great way to start!
