Can you tell us about yourself and why you started @my_philocaly?
My name is Verena, I’m 31 years old and my-philocaly.com has been my creative outlet since 2016. Everything began back in 2013, when I occasionally started sharing daily outfit pictures in front of my closet. At one point there seemed to be a demand for styling tips, closet organisation and handbag reviews, so much that I needed more space for these subjects. So, I decided to start my blog: My-philocaly, a place where I could deep dive into my passion for fashion and lifestyle. My blog is my heart and soul, and at this point also my part-time job.
Your closet is incredible, did you have fun creating your dream wardrobe?
Four years ago, I fulfilled my dream and converted my guest bedroom into a walk-in closet. Every single detail of the process was precisely planned out. Looking at the tall shoe racks, the organised clothes and accessories repeatedly make my fashion-heart race! Remodelling this room has been a lot of fun and I love that I can always reinvent myself there. Although I’m usually quite messy, in my closet everything has its place. When organising your closet, it’s incredibly helpful to know your own color palette. It doesn’t only simplify putting outfits together, but also to sort your clothes by color. My closet, for instance, consists of 60% white and beige clothes (my favourite colors), 30% black, and 10% other colors. I’d also recommend to hang as many clothing pieces as possible on racks. That way, you’ll have the best overview and are able to arrange everything properly. I generally only use shelves for shoes, bags and decoration. Stacked shirts and jeans are difficult to keep tidy in shelves throughout the day, which is also a reason why I try to hang all my clothes on racks and what doesn’t fit goes into a drawer. This is how a closet will always look neat.
How would you describe your style, and what styling tips would you give people who are inspired by it?
I’d describe my style as being feminine, classy and business-chic. I rarely follow trends. Although I really like shopping from high-street brands, I always look for timeless pieces in relatively good quality, so that I can wear them beyond the season. Therefore, I mostly avoid Polyester and Polyacryl. My signature clothing piece is a blazer – I wear that every day to every occasion, and in all cuts and colours. Nothing is as versatile, stylish and elevates a look the way a blazer does. It fits with ripped jeans, fabric trousers, a chic blouse, a camisole, a casual t-shirt and goes well with high heels or sneakers too. No matter what you wear: A blazer always makes you look well-dressed! You could call it a safe bet.
Here too, it’s really helpful to know your own color palette and to stick to it even when you’re shopping. I mainly love neutral colors, like white, beige and black. These colors are timeless, classy and harmonise with each other and that’s how everything goes well together, no matter which pieces I choose to combine. If I’m in the mood for a pop of color, any color is easy to integrate into my neutral color palette. My motto is: “Invest in timeless basics and classics, and you’ll never waste time putting an outfit together”.
You recently visited Crete, and we're obsessed with your looks from the trip; what three holiday essentials would you always recommend?
Crete was really beautiful!
My holiday essentials definitely include something made out of linen, like a blazer or a mini skirt for example. Also don’t forget a pretty bikini. I particularly love white bikinis, with scalloped edges for example. Last but not least: A bamboo bag. That will make every outfit look like a holiday!
Your bag collection is one to be rivalled; can you talk us through your favorites and any advice for people looking to invest in a designer handbag?
My favourite bag is the Louis Vuitton Pochette Metis. It’s simply the most versatile bag and perfect for every day! If you want to invest into a designer handbag, from brands such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel or Hermes, it makes sense to go for a timeless and classy model. Those bags will retain their value the most and are always in fashion. For someone who doesn’t want to buy a new handbag, there are great vintage handbags to pick from. Besides that, I would also choose a neutral color, which is easy to combine. You can easily get tired from flashy colours. Make sure you pay attention to the material: Caviar or Saffiano leather are less sensitive than lamb’s leather or uncoated canvas for example.
