You started your career path as an attorney. What made you decide to switch gears to launch Haute Hijab and get into content creation?

Haute Hijab was something I started as a creative outlet while juggling my legal career at the same time. I’ve always had a love for fashion and wearing hijab but more importantly, the social mission of empowering Muslim women kept me motivated and fulfilled. In 2010 the space was so new and I saw a huge void that I knew I could tackle. Providing Muslim women with beautiful, high-quality hijabs that makes them feel comfortable and confident has become my life’s purpose – which is quite the departure from what I believed was to be my path in the legal field. In 2016 I finally quit my job as an attorney and moved to NYC to focus on Haute Hijab full-time and today, we’re the leading US hijab brand.

How have you utilized your social platforms to share your brand's message, promoting modesty in fashion and normalizing the hijab?

Social media has certainly played a large role in our success. Back when we started in 2010 we got on Facebook to test our idea before we launched a single product. It was on Facebook we grew an audience, tested products and received valuable feedback about the brand our future customers wanted to represent them. Along the way, (and now on Instagram, YouTube, Twitter and Pinterest) we attracted the attention of the mainstream which helped tremendously in our mission of normalizing hijab so as to demystify misconceptions and break stereotypes about hijab and Muslim women. This in turn aids our mission of building a world where Muslim women can feel comfortable and confident in hijab to help dispel any sense of unease or alienation that they may experience in their daily lives.

You've built an incredible community around Haute Hijab. Explain the importance of community to you. How do you create community, and what role does it have to play in the evolution of the fashion and influencer industries?

Community building has been at the core of our brand since its inception. It’s not an after-thought or a tactic employed to gain followers or engagement – it’s the very first brand pillar at Haute Hijab followed by Product and Service. We are in service of our community (i.e, the Muslim community) and building a community around the brand is one of the ways in which we fulfill our social mission of empowering Muslim women. We’re so blessed to have such a loyal community that’s not only engaged, but positive, fun-loving contributors to the society around them.

Not only do you run a full-time influencer business, but you also wear many hats running the Haute Hijab e-commerce brand and business. How do you balance such a demanding schedule?

As the CEO of a growing business (we’re now a team of 12!) I’ve learned that structure is everything. I wake up early and utilize the morning hours and delegate tasks wherever possible. I’m still learning how to balance everything – it’s not easy and there will always be things that are sacrificed – but the key is knowing what to sacrifice and when. I have to admit I’m an absolute workhorse and over the past year I let work take precedence over things I shouldn’t have – like my health and faith, which I’m actively working on in the new year.

What are your goals for 2019?

We’re *so* excited for the year ahead. We’re finally moving out of our co-working space into our very own office in downtown Manhattan! We’ve also got some exciting product launches of different hijab categories which is really exciting. Additionally, I’m working with one of my favorite brands that I’ve been dying to work with since I started so I’m *so* excited for that campaign to officially launch 🙂
