One scroll through My Texas House and you’ll quickly realize Erin has nailed the super cozy meets ultra chic feel. Learn how she got her start, the challenges of work life balance and how she keeps it real with her followers.
How did you get your start in the influencer industry? I got my start in the influencer industry when I began sharing photos of my home building process on my Instagram page. It was slow going at first, and I didn’t start gaining followers until my house was completed and we started furnishing it. After being noticed and shared by a few bigger home decor accounts my page started to take off. I then began dedicating my time to building my page with consistent posting, learning the tricks of the trade by emulating what other successful bloggers did, and most importantly, making valuable connections and friendships in the IG world! It wasn’t until over a year and a half after I started my page, that I really began to work with companies and realize that it had actually become a business! I absolutely never dreamed that my little Instagram page would be where it is today!
What do your followers walk away with after visiting your content platform? I hope that my followers are inspired to create beautiful spaces in their home after visiting my page, and that they realize they don’t have to break the bank to do so! But more than that, I hope they realize that behind the beautiful squares and the perfectly staged photos, that real life is going on in my home. I’m always reminding my followers that while the photos may make my home seem perfectly put-together….life is messy. And we all have struggles, imperfections, unmade beds, piles of junk on the counter, and stacks of laundry waiting for us….and that’s perfectly ok!
What has been the most challenging thing about running My Texas House? I think the hardest part of running my page is just finding the right balance between work and family. This “job,” while I really love it and it never feels like a job, is not a 9-5, Monday through Friday gig. It’s a 7 day a week, pretty much any time of day commitment in which my home and life is on display for hundreds of thousands of people every day. So there’s not a lot of days off unless I make a conscious decision to stay off of social media. For me, it was a struggle going from being a stay at home mom for 10 years to a full-time business owner and supporter of my family literally over night! I think my kids have had to really adjust to having a working mom too. So this year, I’m trying to really take a step back and determine how much work I can reasonably take on and how much time I can devote each day to my work, while still being present for my kids and have quality time with my family! I think lots of working moms can relate to that struggle!
Is there anything you wish you could go back and tell yourself before launching your influencer business? Well, I think the biggest thing I would go back and tell myself is to chose a different name for my page! It would be so hard to change it now, since that’s how I’m known….but I’m in constant fear of the possibility of us moving out of TEXAS! Then what would I do?!! I would definitely recommend to anyone looking to get in to the influencer business to think long and hard about their page name and make sure it isn’t something that may back you into a corner later on!
Favorite Interior Trend of 2018? I love the incorporation of light wood tones and soft muted colors that have come on the scene in both in kitchen and furniture design.
Home Design Hack? A little secret of mine is that I use both fresh and faux flowers together in my floral arrangements! Saves a little money using faux flowers and it allows you to create some really beautiful and realistic bouquets!
